Hints and Tips – how to select interventions
• Select the interventions which appear most likely to achieve target outcomes, not outcomes selected to fit existing interventions.
• Focus the discussions between partners on themes such as the National Priorities for Community Regeneration or the Community Planning Partnership’s strategic regeneration objectives.
• Try to focus on interventions which contribute most to addressing the big issues and targets.
• Encourage service providers to focus services in ways which fit best with strategic objectives and which are likely to be most cost-effective in delivering regeneration outcomes.
• Assess whether continuing with previous regeneration programmes and activities is worthwhile. Check whether these interventions are still the most effective way of tackling the particular issue.
• The Project Profiles on the Scottish Centre for Regeneration’s website are a useful source of information on projects developed across Scotland. They provide helpful examples which could be followed and lessons for those implementing ROAs.
• The Department for Communities and Local Government’s Neighbourhood Renewal web-site is also useful; it includes valuable evaluation evidence about the effectiveness of a range of different regeneration initiatives.
• Access Renewal.net www.renewal.net/ for Toolkits advising on defining problems, selecting projects and implementing projects.
• Project appraisal is a useful tool for ensuring that the interventions chosen are the best way of tackling local problems. Project appraisal should be an ongoing process, so re-visit interventions at regular intervals to make sure they continue to offer the best approach.
