National Standards for Community Engagement

The National Standards for Community Engagement have been developed with the involvement of over 500 people from communities and agencies throughout Scotland. They are a practical tool to help improve the experience of all participants involved in community engagement to achieve the highest quality of process and results.

The standards are measurable performance statements which can be used by everyone involved in community engagement to improve the quality and process of the engagement. They set out key principles, behaviours and practical measures that underpin effective engagement. They will be of real benefit to community planning partnerships in involving communities to achieve real and sustained results.

The standards can be used in both formal and informal community engagement.

Both the National standards themselves and the user guides are available in the following languages:

National standards: Arabic : Bengali : Chinese : French : Punjabi : Urdu : Polish

User guides :Arabic : Bengali : Chinese : Urdu

Shelter’s new project to engage communities

Shelter have contracted Clearplan UK to produce practical tools on how housing and homelessness bodies can better engage communities on services for homeless people.

Over the next year Clearplan is working on a resource pack and a training schedule which will bring together good practice and provide useful pointers for organisations working at the frontline. As part of the process Shelter will be engaging with communities who are or have been affected by development. The National Standards for Community Engagement will form a key part of the new toolkit. See the Shelter website for further information.
